About the Item
Jennie Augusta Brownscombe was born in a log cabin in Honesdale, Pa in 1850. She went past her modest roots to attend Cooper Union and the National Academy in New York. By 1890, Brownscombe had turned to painting historical portraits and scenes and that was where she made her mark. Her paintings and images were published in the popular magazines of her day. She belonged to several important National art organizations and clubs
This painting is an excellent example of Brownscombe’s ability to depict historic events with great accuracy. Depicting the First Thanksgiving at the Plymouth Colony, she fills the scene with a great crowd of Pilgrims in period costume and a fitting setting. The painting is oil on canvas board of the period, ca. 1914. It measures 12” x 18” and is housed in a gold classical frame that is a generation earlier, but fitting for the work. The overall framed dimensions are 16” x 22”. The painting is signed lower left and has a numbered label affixed nearby that surely is from a significant art exhibition. It is backed by a plexiglass, on the reverse. The painting is slightly darker than the images present, but under good light shows very well. Both the painting and frame are in very good condition and ready to hang on the wall of your choice.
